RESOLUTIONS? Or NOT?
Over the years, I’ve come to learn that I am not a RESOLUTIONS kind of girl.
After years of being on the resolutions “bandwagon”, I found that resolutions actually set me up for failure.
If I have a set back or two, which I will, I tend to feel like there is no starting over. Guess I’ll have to wait till next year…NOT!
Sometimes, it is not as easy to RESOLVE to a new habit as we would like it to be.
I definitely have learned to extend grace to myself at the risk of giving up on my goals completely.
Instead of resolutions, I take the opportunity to reevaluate what worked and what didn’t work in the last year.
I then add in new and exciting goals that my heart is yearning to reach in the year ahead.
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
Do you need to set some new intentions for yourself? for your family?
Take some time to reflect on where you are in your life and where you want to be 6 months from now, a year from now, etc.
Defining what you want to see happen in every aspect of your life is the best way to start.
My husband and I have a planning day each new year where we get away by ourselves and talk about the last year and dream about the next one.
We start with the areas of our lives that mean the most to us:
Marriage
Family
Spiritual Growth
Health and Wellness
Financial Goals
Relationships
In each category, we look at what we have accomplished and what has been our greatest struggle.
With those in mind, we talk about where we want to move to in each area.
We ask ourselves what we want to see happen in each of these in order to bring more peace, joy, and purpose into our lives.
Then we take each category and write down practical steps that we can take each quarter, month, week, and day to get there.
Breaking it down this way, for us, has been invaluable.
We know that what we spend our time doing each day is important in staying true to ourselves and our desires for our family.
A few tips to remember when planning your goals:
First off, if you think you can’t reach them, YOU WON’T!
Believing in yourself is a top priority in ever reaching your goals.
If we believe the LIE that we just can’t get there, then we will NOT get there.
I am a firm believer that it is important to SPEAK LIFE into my goals saying things such as “When I”… or “When we…”
There is power in our words!
Don’t be afraid to set BIG GOALS!
I used to be afraid to set big goals that seemed unattainable to reach.
I soon realized that in order to set small goals I need to know what I want my end result to be.
This helps me to be more intentional when working on my smaller goals that I need to accomplish on the way.
Break your big goals down to SMALLER GOALS.
Mapping out the steps to take each day, week, month, quarter, and year is extremely important.
As you accomplish your smaller goals, you will build the momentum you need to stay on track towards your bigger ones.
Be sure your goals are MEASURABLE.
Being able to measure your goals will be extremely motivating for you.
You will be able to see the progress you are making along the way.
Keeping track of how you are doing is encouraging and helps you stay focused on the bigger picture.
Be willing to adjust your goals. LIFE HAPPENS.
It’s okay if you need to make adjustments here or there.
Review your timeline expectations regularly to see if you need to make any adjustments.
Never look at adjustments as a failure. Accept the reality, improve your process, and move forward.
As long as you learn from your failure or setback, it can be considered a success in the long run.
I would love to hear about your goals for the year! Or, if you are a Resolutions Girl, your resolutions!
In the comments below, share with us one or two that you are committed to this year.
Remember, speaking words of life into your goals helps motivate you into action!
Live light,
Lucia

I love this post so much! My resolutions always left me feeling worse in the new year, especially when they were so toxic like many resolutions often are. Now I am to set some positive goals or intentions without being so specific or negative that they set me up for failure. Thank you for sharing!

This makes me smile so much, Julianne. Moving with intention into the future brings you peace in the process as you go after your goals. Excited to see you flourish in 2021!

I don’t make resolutions either! Too much hype!
Lucia Davison says
Totally with you, Stacey. Hype falls by the wayside too quickly. Focusing on having an ebb and flow as we move towards the future toward our vision and passion for the year is much more profitable all around. Thanks for stopping by and happy ebbing and flowing in 2021!
