Now is the time to reset your goals!
Remember, January 1st is not a MAGICAL day when it comes to goal setting!
There is no need to beat yourself up for not setting goals at the new year or even if you haven’t had the chance to implement the ones you made.
Take a deep breath in…..release it…. along with the mindset that you have already failed or you are already “behind” in some way.
Release the guilt!

Goal Setting 101
Each year, my husband and I spend time together reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the new year ahead.
We try to make this happen the last week of December each year, however, life happens!
If you haven’t had a chance to do this yet, don’t fret, you can do this at any point during the year as a couple or just for yourself!
Even if you only have a few hours to invest, it is totally worth it to make this happen.
Is it Just Me?
If you are anything like me, goal setting is a complete dopamine rush!
I get super excited about fresh starts.
The excitement and anticipation can be really motivating. It can also set us up for failure if we are not careful.
Even though we can feel incredibly great after a goal setting session, a week later we can look at those goals and think, “What on earth was I thinking?”
Sometimes in all our excitement of wanting to “fix” everything we didn’t “fix” in the prior year, we carry goals over that are still not right for this season in our life.
Setting the RIGHT Goals as we RESET
As we reset our goals, we need to be sure that we are choosing the right goals.
Our goals should always connect to our overall vision for this year and ultimately, to our life legacy.
The secret to setting the right goals is making sure that they move us in the direction of our long term vision for our life.
Ask yourself if this goal matters long term. If it does not, reconsider it.
Following through on our goals is much easier when we see the big picture and how this goal affects that picture in the long run.
Knowing our WHY for setting the goal will help us not give up if we fall off the road for a week or even a month.
Our “why” will make it easier for us to jump right back in and begin gaining momentum again to successfully complete our initial goal.
I created an easy to use Personal Goal Setting Worksheet that comes with 7 Game Changing Tips to help you find your BIG PICTURE.

Baby Steps
Setting the right goals is very important, but it is also important to break our goals down in chewable bites.
Creating mini-goals as we move toward our end goal will give us little successes along the way that we can celebrate.
This FREE personal worksheet will help you break down your Big Goals to make them more “doable”.
It’s so important to give ourselves grace.
We were never created to be PERFECT.
So give yourself a break and press on to the goal ahead.
Goal Setting is an Investment
Another important question to ask yourself is if you have what you need to invest into this goal right now?
Some goals require finances. Is this a wise decision for you to invest in this goal right now?
Would it create more debt for you?
Are your finances in a good place now or maybe this goal would be better pursued later of this year once we get past the COVID-19 pandemic?
Creating financial pressure on your budget for the sake of meeting a goal is not worth it in the long run.
It can create additional unneeded stress on you and your family.
Is Now the Right Time to Reset Your Goals?
It is so important as we think about a reset on our goals to be sure we are setting the goals that are right for us TODAY.
Possibly some of the goals that we want to set are meant to be jump started 3 months from now or 6 months from now.
When setting goals, it is also important to evaluate our daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
We must be mindful whether we actually have time to accomplish this particular goal in this season.
Ask yourself:
- Is this lockdown giving me the opportunity to jump start that goal?
- Should I start this goal at a later date?
- Can I move other responsibilities to a later time or delegate to another person so I can finally work on these goals?
- Even if our goal is super important to our future, is now the right time?
These are important questions to consider.
We don’t want to create more pressure on ourselves if our timing is off.
We must be kind to ourself.
Even though it requires extra effort to reach those goals, we want to remain joyful and connected in the process.
As I said earlier, goal setting for me is a dopamine rush and I thrive on it
Whether you love to set goals or they completely overwhelm you, it’s okay to take it slow, and reset them today.
Or, at a later time when the season is right.
Live Light,
Lucia

Hi Mel,
So glad you enjoyed it. Hope your new year is off to a great start!

Hi Lucia, I love this!! Goal setting is important all year round, not just on January 1st. I made a goal last January 1st to write a book, by February I realized that I just didn’t have time to take on that big of a project, and stopped writing it. Instead I kept writing my weekly blog. Doing both was just too time consuming, and even though I felt silly saying that now I wasn’t going to write a book after I made all the announcements, I just decided that I would have to be embarrassed and take it all back, and set a different goal.. And I am glad I did. I , instead, decided to do my first art show in July of last year. And I did that, and that has led to 3 more art events, and such a richer creative year. So, its okay to changed your mind, I agree!!!! Whatever resonates with you, its your goal after all ! Love Peta

Hi Peta,
Thanks so much for stopping by.
For one, that is an amazing goal and one of mine as well. I do feel that by committing to write on our blogs, we are getting some good writing practice though!
Congratulations on taking the leap into the art arena! That is something to celebrate. I have a friend that travels all over the country doing art shows and it has brought such incredible joy into her life.

Yes! I get so enthusiastic, and then discouraged if I don’t accomplish EVERYTHING by February. Great advice, and very realistic.
Lucia Davison says
Hi Trish,
I totally get that! I continually remind myself that I am NOT Superwoman, even though I like to think I am, ha!
Thanks for visiting!

This is a great article – so many are afraid to set goals as they feel they are setting themselves up for failure. SO not the case if you do it right.
Lucia Davison says
Hi Lisa,
So true. We can put too much pressure on ourselves and it can backfire causing us not to accomplish anything at all. Taking the time to create a plan that works for us can make all the difference.
Lisa says
Very good points! I started setting seasonal goals last year instead of yearly goals. The shorter timeline helps me stay focused and driven.

Hi Lisa,
Yes, breaking down my goals has been a game changer for me. If I do not keep it concise I tend to forget about what is truly important and allow myself to easily get distracted with all…the…things! Thanks for stopping by!
Amanda Kerr says
I love goal setting and just reflecting on my short/ long term goals! Very important! 🙂
Lucia Davison says
Hi Amanda,
Setting goals has always been a adrenaline boost for me. It’s funny because it drives my husband crazy most of the time. Until he sees the fruit of my labor. Then he is very appreciative. :-).

I cannot wait until we get past this pandemic so I can go over my goals and reset my plan.
Lucia Davison says
Hi Doreen,
It would be nice to know WHEN we will get past it. I’m trying to reset my plan now while I have some down time. I’ve been able to switch my timeline around on a few goals and still keep the ball moving forward fortunately. Is there anything you can rearrange in your plan that you can work on now?
